In 1966 the Whatnop Shop opened it's door on the second floor of the Whitneyville Library, offering crafts, homemade jams and jellies, plus many other items. The money generated by the Whatnot Shop was used to buy books for both children and adults.

Trustee Edith A. Mureen kept the shop open the first few years and since then volunteers have kept it going. The Shop was closed for a few years, and the second floor was used for the library's annual book sale held in August. In 1995 the trustees opened the Whatnot Shop again for the summer, and elected Janet O'Neal as manager. With Janet's help the shop has once again become the magnet it was in 1966.  In 1998 the Whatnot Shop closed its doors and gave way again to summer book sales that were held on Saturdays from May to Sept.  The second floor which was host to summer book sales held every Saturday has once again given way to the Whatnot Shop under the direction of Janet O'Neal.  Now in our new building since October 2018 Janet along with volunteers will keep the shop open January to December, yearly.  The Whatnot shop is filled with local crafts for sale by local crafter's.  Crafter's who would like to display and sell their works can contact the library at 207-255-8077 M-Sat. 10 am to 4 pm.  Tables are free and crafters agree to give 15% of sales to the library.  So stop by and see what it is for sale.
